Tools

Some of the tools involved.

drawknives.jpg

Draw Knives have several wood working applications, we used these to peel the bark off the logs.  The bark must be removed to prevent bug infestation and wood decay.

scribe.jpg

Scribes are a large compass with leveling bubbles used to trace the contours.  This is a homemade scribe, which was used to trace out the round notches used to join the logs.

froemaul.jpg

Froes are used to rive wood, and the maul is a piece of hardwood used as a hammer or sledge.  Froes are most commonly associated with splitting out wood shingles.  The maul I made out of a piece of hickory.

hatchet.jpg

The hatchet is used for removing limbs, chopping off knots and removing the bulk of wood from the log notches.
