Log Peeling

Gathering and Preparing the Logs

logsurfing.jpg

Logs need to be relatively straight and with little taper.  The best tree I had available was Poplar.  Trees were gathered that are 8" to 14" diameter, and pulled from the woods with a tractor.  Usually two to three 16' long logs could be harvested from each tree.

Logs were laid up until they could be peeled.

We peeled the logs using draw knives, removing the outer bark.  This was long, hard, back breaking work.

The peeled logs are stacked with spacers in between and covered with a tarp to dry  for roughly 6 months or until dry.
