Scribing

Scribing the half round notch.

The scribe is a large compass with bubble levels used to trace out the notch.

Position the top log where you want it to sit on the bottom log.  Then measure the gap between the logs.

We were going for a 2 inch gap, so with the point set at 2 inches, adjust the marker to the point just measured above.

Now mark both sides of the log with the scribe.  Hold the scribe  vertical by watching the level, and follow the contour of the lower log with the pointer while the marker marks the log to be notched.  Note the scribe is reset for the other end of the log to achieve the same gap all the way across.

With careful scribing and notching, good tight fitting notches are created - just as if the trees grew that way.
